Sanjeev Chopra takes over as Addl Chief Secy of Industry, Commerce & Enterprises dept

Kolkata: In a reshuffle in the IAS cadre in Bengal, Sanjeev Chopra has become the Additional Chief Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Enterprises department.

He will continue as Director General of the Administrative Training Institute (ATI) as his additional charge.

Chopra became the Additional Chief Secretary of Industry, Commerce and Enterprises department, replacing S Kishore, who was the Principal Secretary of the department. Kishore has now become the Principal Secretary of Biotechnology department.

Chopra, an IAS officer of the 1985 batch, is a Doctorate in Agriculture and has penned several books. During handing over of land to farmers in Singur following the order of Supreme Court, he was the Additional Chief Secretary of Agriculture department. He got in touch with different agriculture universities and agriculture scientists and sought their opinion on how the yield of the area can be increased.

He was the main instrument behind setting up Mati Tirtha in East Burdwan. He was transferred to ATI as its Director General, where he introduced several new courses for the trainee bureacrats, both from the state and outside.

The Bengal government's main thrust now is to bring investment to the state from other countries and other states and to do this, great networking is required. Chopra, who is a very senior bureaucrat, has a very clear perception of the state and knows how to bring in investment.

In view of the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) scheduled to be held on February 7 and 8 in 2019, the induction of Chopra as Additional Chief Secretary of the Industry, Commerce and Enterprises department is very significant.

It may be mentioned that during her recent trip to Frankfurt and Milan, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has invited representatives of various chambers of commerce to join BGBS.

It will be an advantage for the state government to have someone in the rank of Additional Chief Secretary, to interact with the foreign delegations and bureacrats who will join BGBS 2019, in a much better way.
