Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) will plant 60,000 saplings in New Town to celebrate Bonmohotsav on Friday.
HIDCO has already decided to make New Town a green city. Several NGOs, clubs and housing complex residents' associations will be given saplings free of cost at a function scheduled to be held in New Town on Friday. They will also be given fruit saplings and space will be allotted to them and asked to maintain the saplings for one year. They should get themselves registered with HIDCO and take photographs of the saplings which will be grown into trees next year and the best maintained ones will be rewarded.
The step has been taken to make them aware about the environment. HIDCO will plant saplings at Eco Urban village, Eco Park and other areas. Avenue plantation will be made along new streets. The decision to observe Bonmohotsav in a big way was recently taken at a meeting attended by senior officials of HIDCO, New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) and the state Forest department. It may be recalled that HIDCO had planted 60,000 saplings in 2016, many of which got uprooted.
HIDCO has already set up tall tree nurseries. Over the years steps will be taken to increase the green cover of New Town. Waste water is being recycled for the roadside trees. There are many parks including one meant for senior citizens. Eco Park and Eco Urban village are examples of preservation of greenery.
