Gurudas Dasgupta passes away, CM condoles death
Kolkata: Gurudas Dasgupta, veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader and former Lok Sabha member, passed away in Kolkata on Thursday, just three days before his birthday on November 3. He was 83. His last rites will be performed on Friday. He was suffering from lung cancer for the past few months.
Condoling his death, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Saddened at the passing away of CPI leader Gurudas Dashgupta ji. He will be remembered for his contribution to the nation as a Parliamentarian and trade union leader. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues."
Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar in his condolence message said "as a Union Minister and Member of Parliament during 1989-1991, I had the privilege of knowing him. He was fearless and ace parliamentarian who always presented his view point firmly. His death is a huge loss to the Indian polity". Dasgupta became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1985. He became the general secretary of AITUC in 2001. He was elected from Panskura Lok Sabha seat, a CPI stronghold in 2004 and subsequently from Ghatal Parliamentary seat in 2009.
He had raised several important issues in Parliament including the 2G scam. He was loved and respected by political leaders across party lines for his simplicity and oratory skills.
Trinamool Congress MLA Anil Adhikari from Falakata died on Thursday. Condoling his death Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, tweeted: "Saddened at the passing away of Anil Adhikari, MLA representing Falakata constituency and also the Falakata Block President of the party. Condolences to his family, friends and his admirers."
