'Comprehensive GRID needed to produce renewable energy on large scale'
Kolkata: Member of Parliament Manish Gupta, the former Power minister of the state on Tuesday stressed on the importance of developing a comprehensive GRID exclusively dedicated for renewable energy in order to produce this type energy on a large scale.
He was speaking at an interactive session — "Generation of Electricity from Cow Dung" organised by Bharat Chamber of Commerce at its office.
He said renewable energy has its limitations. One cannot produce renewable energy and put in into a thermal GRID. Renewable energy cannot be produced on a large scale if thermal GRID is used for distribution.
"I raised the issue in the Parliamentary committee that if renewable energy is pumped into the thermal GRID, in a large quantity, there will be problems in distribution and transformer. The frequency would also be disturbed. Hence, there has to be a dedicated corridor exclusively for renewable energy or it cannot be produced on a large scale," Gupta said.
He also said: "There had been new enthusiasm among people centering the renewable energy world but there is a stumbling block. The planning commission said even if we increase our efforts 40 fold in the field of renewable energy, we will not be able to provide even the 20 percent of the total basket of energy in next thirty years". He also stressed on the energy security in the country and that electricity is a measure to determine the economic progress of the country. The storage of solar power is a problem worldwide. Efforts are going on to increase storage capacity.
