Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday seized huge quantities of plastic following raids in different parts of Salt Lake.
The raids were conducted by the Environment department of the BMC.
BMC workers and officials visited the market in ward 29 this morning and seized plastic packets which were being used by the shopkeepers. One shopkeeper was fined Rs 500. The anti-plastic drive will continue as the civic authorities have decided not to allow plastic in Salt Lake. The drives will be conducted in all the markets and any shopkeeper found to be using plastic beyond the stipulated norm will be pulled up. The BMC had carried out extensive campaigns urging shopkeepers not to use plastic packets.
Rahima Bibi Mondol, member, Mayor-in-Council in charge of Environment said the drives will be conducted regularly. She said the underground sewer lines get clogged because of plastic packets. BMC has taken up elaborate measures to prevent waterlogging. The drive against plastic will help the civic body to save the underground sewer lines from being choked. It may be mentioned that because of various steps, there was no waterlogging in Bidhannagar despite the heavy shower that had hit Kolkata and its suburbs last week.
