Agri budget presented in Assembly

Kolkata: The expected production of food grains and rice will be around 184.23 lakh MT and 161.84 lakh MT in 2017-18, state Agriculture minister Ashis Banerjee said, while presenting the budget of the department for 2018-19 in the Assembly on Monday evening. The net increase in the annual income of farmers from Rs 91,011 during 2010-11 to Rs 2,39,000 during 2016-17, is an increase of 262.74 percent.
Banerjee said System of Rice Intensification (SRI) has been adopted to increase the production of rice at low cost. The state has been able to increase the area of production of aromatic rice like Govindabhog and Tulaipanji.
The state government has also attached importance on the production of pulses, as the production in Bengal falls short of the requirement. The estimated production for the crop during 2017-18 has been 4.63 lakh MT. The state government has fixed a target of 4.75 lakh MT for 2018-19.
The department has taken several initiatives to improve the overall economy of state-run farms and to attain self-sufficiency in quality seed production.
The farms will engage contractual, daily and piece-rated workers to ensure maximum coverage of the net cultivable area under them.
