Cancer ward to reopen in Ggm civil hospital

Gurugram: Laying defunct for three years, the cancer ward in the Gurugram civil hospital is expected to begin soon. The move came after a team of oncologists has been transferred to work in the government hospital.

According to official sources, the last surgery conducted at the hospital was in 2016. Due to non-functioning of the cancer ward, a large number of patients had to either go to private hospitals for treatment or they were referred to Safadarjung Hospital or All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

It is important that even though Gurugram boasts of possessing world-class medical facilities, these services are mostly provided by private players. Forget coming close, the main government hospitals in the city was recently closed down after it was deemed to be unfit for running the operations.

The civil hospital right now is functioning from Sector-10. Facing immense infrastructure crisis, the management of the government hospital is now forced to consider the option of a public-private partnership route for better medical services.

Crucial facilities like dialysis and MRI departments have already been to private hand, there are now plans to even entrust the responsibility of handling emergency and OT services to private medical experts.

To deal with the shortage of doctors there are also plans to avail the services of the private doctors but the plans have not fructified yet. For long there have been complaints that lack of proper medical services in the public healthcare system especially in Gurugram results in patients venturing to expensive private hospitals in the city or choose Delhi government hospitals.

Based on an RTI, the absence of trauma center and other medical facilities have resulted in over 10,000 patients being referred to Delhi government hospital from 2004 till October 2017. In the past, the civil hospital has faced criticism for not having enough facilities to accommodate the gynecology and neonatal wards.
