Pradhan launches PM Ujjawala Yojana in Delhi

New Delhi: The Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana (PMUY) was launched in the state of Delhi at Yamuna Sports Complex, New Delhi by Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, on Saturday. Mahesh Giri, Member of Parliament, East Delhi, O P Sharma, MLA, Vishwas Nagar, Sanjiv Singh, Chairman, IndianOil, senior officials of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Oil Marketing Companies, women beneficiaries of the scheme among others were also present on the occasion.
Approximately 400 LPG connections were handed over to women of BPL families during the event.
Speaking on the occasion, Pradhan said that Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has transformed the lives of more than 3.5 crore women fulfilling the vision of Prime Minister to provide clean cooking fuel to them and eliminating the health hazards that were caused due use of unhealthy fuels. He thanked the Prime Minister for showing faith in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas by increasing the target of Ujjwala connections from the existing target of 5 crore to 8 crore by 2020.
Pradhan added that the enhanced target will be incorporating genuinely poor households left out of Socio Economic Caste Survey (SECC) list and now will be empowering a wider section of society.
The scheme would now also benefit BPL families from SC/ST households, PMAY (Gramin), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), forest dwellers, most backward classes (MBC), Tea and Ex-Tea Garden Tribes and people residing in islands and river islands.
The Petroleum Minister said that Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has achieved a great success since it was launched. He stated that LPG penetration across India has improved drastically with 9 crore new LPG connections being distributed in the last 4 years.
Pradhan also highlighted positive impact of the recently launched PM LPG Panchayat initiative which seeks to serve as a platform to interact with the beneficiaries, harness their experiences and ensure the safety of the first time LPG users. He added that LPG Panchayats will also be used as a forum to re-inform the new LPG users about some of the ongoing schemes such as MUDRA, STAND UP India, Sukanya Samridhi Yojna, National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), encouraging them to access the benefits of these programmes.
O P Sharma thanked Pradhan for rolling out the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in the state of Delhi and appreciated the widespread coverage of the scheme which has transformed the lives of millions of women. He stated that from Saturday onwards the women of Delhi would now be free from smoke and tears due to burning of solid fuels.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanjiv Singh highlighted the transformative impact of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana in the lives of women. He said that the introduction of the scheme in Delhi would further increase the penetration of LPG among the poorest of the poor.
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched in May 2016 with the aim to recognize the respect to women's self-expression by providing them a life free from drudgery, free from smoke and ill health. The scheme has already enrolled over 3.56 crore customers since its launch and seeing the transformative change that has taken place, the target for enrolment has been increased to 8 crore to be achieved by 2020.
