Fossil fuel power generation with clean technology at affordable prices: NLCIL

Chennai: NLCIL CMD Dr S K Acharya in his Visionary Talk delivered in the 32nd Indian Engineering Congress, held at Hotel Le Royal Meridien, Chennai, stressed that though renewable power generation is increasing rapidly without steady supply and affordable storage system, the demand for fossil fuel based power is unlikely to drop rapidly.
On the third day of the Indian Engineering Congress organized by The Institution of Engineers (India) and hosted by the IEI Tamil Nadu State Centre, Dr Acharya presented the current & future Indian Power Scenario.Elaborating on India's total installed power capacity and the projected requirement fuelled by rapid pace of development, Dr Acharya stressed the need to go for low carbon power generation.
Quoting the Environmental issues including the Paris Agenda on Climate Change, Dr Acharya explained the measures taken/being taken to address the concerns and issues of Thermal Power Plants. He emphasized that high efficiency clean advance coal use and environmental friendly technologies such as Super Critical, Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion, Pressurized Fluidized Bed Combustion, and Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle are to be adopted to increase the efficiency from 38% to about 50%.
Dr Acharya also indicated the steps initiated by Govt of India to achieve the emission norms, setting up of Renewable Energy Power Plants across the country to promote green energy, initiatives taken up in the generation sector and distribution sector with relevant statistics.
Earlier Dr Acharya was welcomed by Navinchandra B Vasoys, President of IE(I) and was introduced to the gathering by Major General Bhattacharya, Secretary & Director General IE(I). President Ram Nath Kovind, graced and addressed the valedictory function of the Congress.
Around 800 delegates from all over India and abroad took part, in which 3 visionary talks and 8 Memorial lectures were presented by eminent personalities including Dr Acharya, CMD/NLCIL, K Pandiyarajan, Minister, Tamil Nadu State Govt, Dr Baskar Ramamurthy Director, IIT Madras, Dr K Sivan, Director Vikram Sarabai Space Centre etc.
NLC India Ltd also bagged the coveted Industry Excellence Award, instituted by the Institution of Engineers (India) which was presented on the first day of the function.
